What defines a 'Leader'?

A 'leader' is often defined as a person 'who leads' the team or an organization or a country. A leader is a person who 'sets an example' is the other most given answer for this question. It is also important to understand that there is no one definition to define a leader.

Theoretically, there are several leadership styles. Namely, 1) Ego leadership 2) Eco leadership 3) Indigenous leadership 4) Queer leadership and 5) Beyond Human leadership. Some sources further extend leadership styles, namely 6) Adaptive leadership and 7) Peace Leadership. With these, it is understandable that different societies expect different leadership styles, personalities and behaviours as per their historical, cultural, socio-economic endeavors as well as political characteristics and the needs of the organization or the country.

In this backdrop, answering "What defines a 'Leader?'" is truly challenging. Thus, it is the writer's standpoint that a person's qualities, experiences, personality, interests, foresight, behaviors defines a leader. Therefore, it is imperative for a 'leader' to first and foremost understand who he/she is. On the other hand, a person who does not know who he/she will not be able to sustain in leadership. A leader is expected to be aware of his strengths/ weaknesses/ futures etc, if not, quoting the traditional definitions, a person will not be capable to lead the others or to become an example.
